Type Essay 5 in a Word Doc. Make sure you put your name, section number, my name, date, and word count on your essay. Title it Essay Five (centered above the first paragraph). Make sure your pages are numbered. (Try to do the following in two hours): Plan, write, and proofread the essay, drawing from a Personal Response/Argument to a Source. This assignment asks you to relate two materials—your own views and the views of the author of the source/article—and in so doing to present an informed outlook of what is being discussed/argued upon. Your reactions to the source/article can take any or all of the following forms: You can agree or disagree with the author’s ideas You can call any of the ideas into question You can respond to any idea or issue expressed in the source Present a clear thesis (that goes beyond the re-telling of the article…what specifically are you agreeing or disagreeing with and why should your reader care?) and develop a unified, coherent essay (minimum of 500 words with at least three paragraphs) with supporting details that relate back to the article. The essay must include an introduction, a body, and a conclusion, at the minimum. It is up to you to decide how many body paragraphs you need; however, keep in mind that each body paragraph should focus on and analyze upon one main point (which is related in each body paragraph’s topic sentence. Name the author and title of the article in the introduction (remember that short work titles should be placed in quotation marks). The source reading is a given for the purpose of the exam, so a Works Cited page and in-text citations are not required. *However if you do directly quote or paraphrase from the article, at this point you would know to cite it correctly. The evaluation of your essay will be based upon whether you: have addressed the topic as it is written, have a clearly written thesis or main statement, as well as the author’s name and title of article in the introduction paragraph, develop your thesis logically and in sufficient detail, relate your thoughts/points back to the author’s thoughts/points throughout your essay, use well-formed sentences and paragraphs, use language appropriately and effectively, and follow standard practices in spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar. Take a few minutes to think about what you want to say before you start writing. Leave yourself time at the end of the attempted two-hour time frame in order to proofread and make corrections. The prompt you are writing about is attached in files.
