|Part One: Scholarly vs. Popular Articles – what’s the difference?
This assignment first requires an understanding of what scholarly (academic) articles are and how they differ from popular articles. Scholarly articles (often referred to simply as “papers” in academic circles) are written by the scientists who conducted the research or study being documented, and these papers are published in periodicals called scholarly journals. Popular articles are typically written by journalists, are published by news websites or magazines, and are written for the general layperson. Please watch the video below for further clarification on how to distinguish the two types of articles and be sure to contact me with any questions you have along the way.
Part Seven: Writing Your Essay
This assignment requires a minimum of 1,000 words (not including citations). This is a minimum requirement for length; feel free to write a longer paper if you have more to discuss! Essays that fall short of 1,000 words will be penalized for brevity; if you thoroughly read the academic journal, there should be plenty to write about! Please consult the grading rubric for details on how your essay grade will be determined and calculated.
Please use a legible font such as Arial (size 10 point) or Times New Roman (size 12 point) and single-spacing is preferred. Please use spell check and proofread your work carefully! This is a college-level writing assignment, and excessive spelling and grammatical errors will be graded down. Write your work in your own words, and if you choose to quote your sources, quote them properly and keep your quotations brief. Excessively long quoted passages will also be graded down. Be sure to include your citations again at the end of your essay in a “Works Cited” area, even though you already submitted them previously. Follow the same instructions regarding MLA format and be sure to include a live website link to both of your sources.
Your work will be submitted through a plagiarism-detecting program called “Unicheck Plagiarism Checker”. If your work is found to be copied from other sources, you could receive a grade of zero and be reported to the Vice President of Student Services for plagiarism. Don’t copy! If you’re unsure what constitutes plagiarism and what doesn’t, check out this tutorial (Links to an external site.). Write your work in your own words, and if you choose to quote your sources, quote them properly, and keep your quotations brief. Follow the Canvas prompts to upload your file through the “Unicheck” plagiarism-detection software and upload only .pdf, .doc, or .docx files. Emailed submissions, hand-delivered hard copies, or entries submitted in .pages format (or anything other than .pdf, .doc, or .docx) will not be accepted.
